Oct 13: Illinois EPA to Clean Dump Sites

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency will be cleaning up three illegal dump sites located in Randolph County.  Contractors will be removing up to 90 cubic yards of waste from four sites including 11-125 Nature Trail Road, 9085 Ridge Road, and 200 Lakewood Drive in Sparta, along with 2304 Goose Lake Road in Prairie du Rocher.  The cleanups will involve removal of household garbage, furniture and tires, all of which were disposed of illegally.  The cleanup is part of the I-RID program, or Illinois Removes Illegal Dumps.  Since fall 2006, the program has cleaned up nearly 250 illegal dumps across Illinois.

Oct 13: Area Men Charged With Methamphetamine Conspiracy

Five area men have been charged with conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine.  James E. Kempfer, Sr., 37 of Chester, Dustin Houk, 23, of Chester, Bryan Houk, 25, of Chester, Loyd W. Tutor, Jr., 31 of Columbia and Loyd W. Tutor, Sr., 51 of Cahokia were named in a one-count indictment returned by a Federal grand jury in Benton.  The indictment charges that from June 2008 until August 11 of this year all five defendants conspired to knowingly and intentionally manufacture methamphetamine. The amount of methamphetamine involved in the conspiracy was five hundred (500) grams or more.  All the defendants face a penalty of 10 years to life imprisonment, up to a $4,000,000 fine, and not less than 5 years supervised release.

Oct 5: Three Dead in Murder/Suicide in Coulterville (Details)

Three Coulterville area residents are dead after an apparent murder-suicide.  According to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department, Brian R. Morrison, 35, of rural Coulterville shot and killed his father and mother-in-law, Stanley A. Garbs, 52, and Tamara R. Carroll, 46, both of Marissa.  After a domestic dispute, Morrison’s wife called her parents to retreive their children, only to have a confrontation between Morrison and the two victims unfold in the Morrison residence driveway.  Morrision allegedly shot Garbs and Carroll with a twelve-gauge shotgun, then took his own life with the same weapon.  After the shootings, Mrs. Morrison called 911 and Randolph County Deputies and Coulterville police responded shortly after midnight Sunday.  Police discovered the bodies in the Morrison driveway and a second weapon at the scene.  Autopsies and toxicology reports are still ongoing.

Report from Randolph County Sheriff’s Department:
On October 3, 2009, shortly before midnight the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a domestic incident involving a man with a gun in rural Coulterville, Illinois. Randolph County Sheriff Fred Frederking states a Randolph County Sheriff’s Deputy and Coulterville Police responded to the scene and discovered three deceased individuals lying in the driveway of the Brian Morrison residence.  An investigation conducted by Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, Randolph County Coroner’s Office and Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services revealed Stanley A. Garbs, age 52 of Marissa, Illinois and Tamara R. Carroll, age 46 of Marissa, Illinois were shot and killed by Brian R. Morrison, age 35 of rural Coulterville, Illinois. Morrison then shot himself, taking his own life before police arrived. All three were shot with a 12 gauge shotgun. Garbs and Carroll were Mr. Morrison’s mother and father in-law.

Mrs. Morrison contacted her parents Stanley Garbs and Tamara Carroll to come get her and her children due to the domestic altercation. After the parents arrived, the situation escalated and Mrs. Morrison called 911 after her parents had been shot. According to Sheriff Frederking, police discovered another weapon at the scene.

The investigation continues awaiting the results of the autopsies and toxicology from Randolph County Coroner Randy Dudenbostel.  Mr. Dudenbostel also stated the investigating agencies are awaiting results from the Illinois State Police Crime Services.

Area 4th Celebrations Postponed

Steeleville: Picnic postponed from Saturday.  Will resume Sunday at 1 PM; fireworks Sunday night at ten. The Steeleville Parade was postponed until Saturday at 11:30 AM and was held successfully at that time.

Mascoutah: All Saturday activities moved to Sunday, same time.

Carbondale: Lions Club fireworks at SIU Arena moved to Sunday at 9 PM.
